On January 4th, 1979, the Shah officially appoints Shapour Bakhtiar, who is the head of the opposition party and a pro-democracy leader. After just 12 days in office, Bakhtiar forces the Shah, the monarch and ruler of Iran, into exile.
On February 1st, 1979, Bakhtiar allows Ayatollah Khomeini to return to Iran from his exile in 1964. Immediately, Khomeini incites a revolution and Bakhtiar flees Iran and takes refuge in France.
Armed urban guerrillas attacked the American Embassy and trapped Ambassador William H. Sullivan and about 100 members of his staff inside.
Tens of thousands of Iranian women protest in Tehran on International Women’s Day to oppose Khomeini's mandatory veiling of women in government offices.
As revolt spread, the military declared neutrality and Khomeini proposed a referendum to replace the monarchy with an Islamic Republic. It passed with 98% of the population voting in favor .
Student protestors overrun the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, seizing its personnel as hostages.
